Yesterday, Canada announced an emissions cap on the oil and gas sector.
The significance of imposing this critical emissions cap on the #oilandgas sector extends beyond national borders. Canada is the world’s fourth-largest oil producer, and the oil and gas industry is currently responsible for over a quarter of the country’s total emissions.
Research shows us that Canada won’t reach net zero without an emissions cap on oil and gas. The industry not only has the resources and capacity to support our journey to #netzero, but @canadianclimateinstitute modeling demonstrates that an emissions cap is achievable without compromising production levels.
Carleton EWB commend the government’s commitment to addressing the environmental impact of the oil and gas sector, noting the significant role for #engineers to play in this process. For example, #TransitionEngineering is an emerging field where engineers in all disciplines use a standard methodology to change unsustainable practices through innovating and carrying out “carbon shift projects” that achieve a downshift in fossil fuel use.
As a member of the socially engaged nationwide @ewb_canada community, We look forward to the role engineers can play in supporting sectors in making this transition, showcasing the innovative contributions of the engineering community to global sustainability efforts.
